How do Veterans Qualify for Va Ccn Addiction Treatment?

To qualify for addiction treatment through the VA Community Care Network (CCN), veterans must first be enrolled in VA health care. We understand that navigating these requirements can be complex, but eligibility is generally triggered when traditional VA facilities cannot meet your needs based on specific criteria.

At least one of the following conditions must be met for a VA CCN referral:

  • Wait Times: The nearest VA facility cannot schedule an initial specialty care appointment for outpatient alcohol rehab within 28 days of your request.
  • Distance and Travel: You reside more than a 40-mile driving distance or your travel time exceeds 60 minutes to the nearest VA facility that offers the required rehab services.
  • Service Availability: The specific outpatient alcohol rehab service you need is not available at the nearest VA facility, or you live in a state without a VA medical facility providing that service.
  • Specific Provisions: You qualify under grandfathered provisions of the Veterans Choice Act.

It is important to note that you cannot self-refer. A VA primary care or mental health provider must first conduct a clinical assessment to determine medical necessity. Once eligibility is confirmed, the provider enters a referral into the VA’s electronic system, which is then reviewed by regional contractors like TriWest or Optum.

We believe that behavioral health care is most effective when providers work together. Once authorized, we can provide community-based, individualized treatment services, such as our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or Medication Assisted Treatment, to support your recovery journey.
